In April we had this surrounding our house....
This photo is actually of the field across the street from our house....the
windbreak itself is actually across another street.....
And last week they harvested the fields.....
this week instead of lovely green pototo plants and rainbows like this.....
we have an empty field like this....
See that dust?....that's topsoil being blown away....The farmer's planted windbreaks like this.....
to avoid losing their topsoil but as they sold off 40 acres here and 40 acres there, the new farmers, who didn't live in the middle of these fields, cut down windbreaks to have more rows to hoe and sow....leaving us with this........

That topsoil finds its way into any remaining entry that we haven't yet found and secured in this old farmhouse....and if we forget and open a window or use the screen doors, we get a layer of that topsoil over everything in the house....but they've planted cover crop that will not only keep the topsoil from blowing away, it will replenishe some of the nutrients taken away by the potatoes and best of all, it creates a 7 - 8 foot living privacy fence around our house...
when this happens, we feel like we are in a world unto ourselves - if you drive up our street this summer, you won't even know our house is there until you near the driveway....
the winds and the dust are a temporary hazzard of living here...and one I can deal with.......
