Our Mudroom is a temporary barn....and other updates~

Yep...our mudroom is doubling as a barn this week.....with all the rain we've had, we brought in the rabbit....critter number one. And, nestled in a crate heated with a lamp are five chirping chicks.......~that's right, we finally did it. We went out and bought some Reds for laying. We started with six and have already lost one.....due to an over-loving yellow lab who nosed the crate until she opened it and loved one to death. No, she didn't bite it or eat it, she just licked it to death while we were otherwise occupied.

I knew this was a possibility...the last time I remember Dad and Mom getting chicks, our yellow at the time loved several of them to death. Labs love to mother - Callie loves on the rabbit all the time - and they just don't understand that sometimes, they just can't do it. The crate is now twist tied as well as locked to avoid another loving tragedy.

We've had an uninvited visitor this week....a fox. He or she has visited three times. We believe there may be a den somewhere and perhaps even two of the predators out there harassing our cats. We've seen fox several times over the years but never this close to the house....our farmer has set up live traps and we've been target practicing......in the meantime, the chicks are safe inside and the cats are being kept in at night.

Our projects took a back seat this past week due to the storms that hit us over and over again....the low spots in our yard were filled with water and our heads were pounding from sinus pressure. We did get the materials to complete the fencing (here's a shout out regarding Tractor Supply who beat Home Depot prices for the total project by $105.00 ~check out that store!).

Genetic DNA took up my time this week.....very interesting stuff for we genealogy addicts.....

David and I celebrated our 27th wedding anniversary yesterday by going out for a very nice seafood dinner while H. spent the night at a friend's house. It was a beautiful day to reflect upon the right choice we made all those years ago and the choices we've made together since then.....I wish everyone a happy marriage

I'll try to be better about posting this week, but its Spring Break for the H man and hopefully we'll get some beach time in.............

Happy Weekend~

  1. Glad the babies are safe. Watch out for the foxes, they can be quite talented at entering cages filled with goodies like these.

  2. We're suddenly aware of the dangers we've been blissfully unaware of...fox, hawks etc. David has been busy designing a safe coop for the new babes....in between target practice!
